Progress and Promise: Coshocton City Schools’ Commitment to Achievement
Each fall, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce releases State Report Cards, which highlight the achievements of school districts across the state and their efforts to prepare students for their future.
Districts are given an overall rating of 1-5 stars, with 5 being the highest. Additionally, districts are scored in the following categories: Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Early Literacy, and Graduation.
For the 2023-2024 school year, Coshocton City Schools received 3.5 stars overall. Three stars mean that districts are meeting state standards. We narrowly missed receiving another star by hundredths of a percentage point in the categories of Gap Closing and Early Literacy. Based on improvements made over the past year that simply haven’t had time to be reflected in the state report card, we are confident we will see an improvement in these categories next year.
While State Report Cards are only one measure of success for our district, we review and study the results in depth each year to pinpoint any areas for improvement. This year we identified two goals revolving around the subjects of mathematics and English Language Arts.
Mathematics will be our primary focus for the next two years. We are making gains in some grade levels that will provide better results in subsequent grade levels, but it will take time for this growth to be realized through test scores.
Related to English Language Arts, we introduced a new curriculum in the middle and high school this year and plan to investigate a possible curriculum change at the elementary school for next year. We also work with a literacy specialist on an ongoing basis to ensure our instructional practices are meeting student needs.
Our commitment to our staff and community is that we will continue to use our resources wisely to provide high-quality materials so that our students receive the best education possible. Thank you to our staff, who have worked diligently over the past year to close gaps and increase achievement.
With Redskin Pride,
Mark Kowalski
